Search Engine Companies such as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc... evaluate websites for certain criteria that they set for how a website should be created or "optimized". Ultimately they rate how well those websites adhere to those criteria and inturn rank those sites for position on the Internet. SEO is just how someone might set up and manage a website for good optimization or a high ranking on Internet search results.
In other words if you set up your website to search engine companies standards, then when someone searches for your products or services, you will hopefully appear on the first page of a search result.
There are many different ways to optimize your site such as inbound and outbound linking, website relevant content, website longevity, website growth, website stability, domain name relevance, domain name ownership, proper keywords, proper website titles and descriptions.
SEO is primarily a natural or "organic" process known as "organic optimization". There are two main ways to have a presence on the internet; they are organically or via paid advertising or PPC (Pay Per Click).
Pay Per Click Advertising is very much like going to an auction. You set an advertising budget for yourself and then you bid against other advertisers for the position you want on search results pages. PPC utilizes many of the same marketing criteria used for SEO when creating ad campaigns. Similar criteria include relevant content and proper keywords.
With PPC you only pay for advertising when someone actually chooses to click on your search results advertisement. In addition you can set daily, weekly and monthly budgets in clearly defined geographic territories of interest.
SEM (Search Engine Marketing) :
Search Engine Marketing is basically how you organize your websites interaction within the Internet. SEO & PPC are primary SEM sources.
